Business Internet Marketing Strategies for You

Two Quick Ways You Can Use Google Webmaster Tools to Get Found Online

1424-Web-Tools-Toolbox-Online-Development_600x600Have you ever discovered a typo in a link to your content that you just promoted all over the web? Worse, has this ever happened, and it was days/weeks/months before you discovered the mistake? Or would you say that the “(not provided)” keyword — probably your number one keyword in Google Analytics if you don’t use AdWords  is about as useful as dirt to your efforts to get found online? Yes? Listen up then and let us introduce you to the Google Webmaster Tools.

What is Google Webmaster Tools?

This is a powerful and free resource you can use to track the health and status of your website  and it shows you things you will not see in Google Analytics.

There’s a dashboard that provides details about site errors, search queries and sitemaps. And it digs deeper into the information about your site’s search appearance and traffic, indexing status and crawl errors and stats.

If you are not a webmaster this may be Greek to you, so we’ll break down into plain English two very specific advantages you can gain by using this tool. If you want to give it a try after reading this post, you can sign up here

Fixing Crawl Errors Will Help You Get Found

Crawl errors alert you to the fact that Google is having trouble with pages on your site; most commonly it means that Google cannot find a page on your site.  It could be a simple typo, or it could be because you changed the name of a page (and that changes the actual URL for the page).

Let’s say your “Contact” page has this URL: http://yourdomainname.com/contact/. You decide that is a little impersonal, so you change the name of the page to “Contact Us”. That move changes the URL to http://yourdomainname.com/contact-us/.

Guess what? When Google  or a potential customer  comes looking for the “contact” page they will not find it because the address now is “contact-us”.

Whenever that happens, Google generates a crawl error which you can see inside the Webmaster Tools. This is easily fixed with a 301 Redirect but if you are not aware of the problem you could be losing site visitors  and potential clients  forever.

Are You Tired of Seeing “(not provided)”?

If you do not have an active paid search campaign in Google AdWords then “(not provided)” is probably at the top of your organic keyword list in Google Analytics. Incredibly useful to your online marketing efforts, isn’t it?

On the other hand, if you look at the Webmaster Tools “Search Queries” tab you’ll have some information at your fingertips that you can actually use. Not only will you see the actual queries people have used to find your site, you’ll also see the number of impressions, clicks, CTR and average position in the SERPs for each query.

That’s what I’m talkin’ about!

You’ll find many more ways to use this tool once you get inside, but it is well worth the effort of setting up just to get the information we talked about here. Let us know how it goes!
