Business Internet Marketing Strategies for You

Understanding Google Local: What the Heck is a 7 Pack?

Posted by Deborah Young

When it comes to abs who doesn't want a 6-pack? When it comes to local search, we're talking 3-packs and 7-packs. If you've heard these terms but don't really know what they mean, well, you're not alone. Fear not! It's really simple actually.

Searching on Google yields a SERP (search engine results page) and when you search for something provided by a local business you'll often see a list of businesses that includes the business name, address, phone number, map, etc. Typically, these Google Local search results will be presented as a list of the top seven results as shown in this example for searching "gyms in washington dc":

This is known as a 7-pack because it's a list of seven businesses.

If your search is very, very localized or covers an area where there are few businesses providing what you're looking for, you may only see a list of three businesses — or a 3-pack — as shown in this example of a search for "gyms in pendergrass ga":

Generally speaking, the more narrow your search parameters the shorter your list of search results. However, with Google's latest Pigeon update, we may be seeing a trend toward more 3 packs and fewer 7 packs.

Give these a read because — whether Google displays a 7 pack or 3 pack or whatever pack — if you don't show up on the list your business is missing out on valuable exposure to potential clients or customers!
