5 Reasons Your Internet Marketing Strategies Must Include Social Media

Woman Deep Into Social Media Is Holding Mobile Phone In One Hand And iPad In The Other

The Pew Research Center recently released research results aimed at understanding the social media landscape. Here are five things we gleaned from the report that can help you decide which social media marketing strategies are best for your business:

85% of American adults are online -- and growing numbers are relying on cell phones as their primary method of access (91% own a cell phone).

More than half of the entire adult population of the U.S. uses social media but young people are still the heaviest users.

Roughly the same percentage of Internet users participate on Twitter (16%), Pinterest (15%) and Instagram (13%). All three are strongly favored by people under 50, with a very healthy representation by those 18-29. There are strong ethnic preferences, too:
- Twitter is favored by urban blacks.
- Pinterest is more widely used by white women.
- Instagram is also female friendly - but with more blacks and hispanics participating.

What 7000 Businesses Discovered About Social Media 61% of adult users admit to taking a "Facebook break" of a few weeks or longer. Why? Mostly because people simply get busy living their lives.

Facebook is still the big dog, but 42% of users ages 18-29 (and 34% of those 30-49) say their time spent on Facebook has decreased over the past year -- but usage is expected to hold steady this year.
